Mankweng’s notoriety in crime and substance abuse prompted the youth of this area to join its policing precinct in an attempt to mitigate these social ills. They have joined forces with the police, the Councillor, and other stakeholders to also organize sports activities as well as to assist poverty-stricken households.
The Chairperson of the Mankweng Police Youth Desk Tumelo Letsilane (31) said that they have decided to volunteer with the police to rid the said area of these scourges to turn it into a crime-free society. “We want our brothers, parents, and sisters to be able to wander the streets freely without any fear of being mugged or raped and it is through this initiative that we can achieve that”,said Tumelo.
One of their stakeholders includes Morongwa Masha who established a rehab at Thabakgone Village in Ga-Mamabolo where they help drug addicts and help them deal with their withdrawal symptoms. There they also accommodate those without food and places to sleep.
Letsilane added that they also visit schools to engage with teachers who assist them to identify learners from underprivileged families. Together with their stakeholders, they buy school shoes, uniforms, and sanitary towels and distribute them to the affected learners according to their needs. He said that teachers are also able to identify kids with unruly behaviors in their homes and they visit those families.
Coffat Mamabolo (28), the Sector One Commander responsible for patrol, said that sports are another way of fighting crime. They recently organized a sports competition for the schools around Mentz where they gave away prizes such as soccer kits, trophies, and driver's Licenses to the winners.
Coffat said that it was the first of many under their initiative and they are adamant that they will succeed. “A soccer tournament is in the pipeline at Nigeria Sports Ground to try and move our youth out of the streets and limit drug abuse and crime in our area”, Mamabolo added.
