The Rise Africans Newspaper takes great pride in celebrating brilliance and spotlighting those remarkable individuals who strive to make the world a better place. It has been over a year since the passing of Reverend Erlo Stegen, the visionary founder of the esteemed KwaSizabantu Mission nestled in the picturesque landscape of Kranskop, Kwa-Zulu Natal. Although his groundbreaking contributions often went unrecognised during his lifetime, the profound legacy he left behind continues to uplift and inspire lives. While we have previously shared stories celebrating his incredible work across diverse fields, we have yet to introduce the man whose spirit fuelled such transformative endeavours.

Honouring his extraordinary influence, it is only fitting to celebrate Reverend Stegen by delving into the remarkable life that shaped his legacy. Over 70 years dedicated to ministry, he exemplified what it means to create a lasting impact, ensuring that future generations would reap the benefits of his tireless efforts. His compassionate spirit made a tangible difference in the communities he served, leaving the world in a far better state than he found it.

He was revered as one of South Africa’s most accomplished farmers and entrepreneurs and earned a place in the hearts of many as one of the most inspiring missionaries of our time. He embarked on his humble ministry journey in an abandoned cowshed, surrounded by a handful of devoted supporters. Fast forward to today, and the KwaSizabantu Mission, which he nurtured from those modest beginnings, now sprawls across a magnificent 550-hectare farm. Since the inception of his ministry, millions from around the globe have crossed the welcoming gates of the mission station, seeking assistance, volunteering their time and experience, or learning the invaluable art of successful farming. Reverend Stegen’s enduring legacy remains a beacon of hope and inspiration for all who wish to make a difference.

What qualities set him apart as a truly visionary leader? He rejected relying on monetary contributions collected after church services to sustain his ministry. Instead, he believed in a different approach that melded faith with tangible action. Over the years, he has pioneered and nurtured various agricultural and developmental projects, each designed to bolster his missionary efforts while creating diverse income streams that resonate with the community’s needs. These initiatives ensure the ongoing viability of various outreach and empowerment programs and strengthen the fabric of his missionary work.

As KwaSizabantu approaches its remarkable 55th anniversary, it stands as Africa's most sustainable mission station—arguably the entire world. Here, vibrant crops flourish, and local hands are uplifted through cooperative endeavours, weaving prosperity into the community's essence. His unwavering commitment to social and spiritual enrichment has transformed this place into a beacon of hope, illuminating the path for countless lives touched by its mission.

In our next article, we will focus on the legacy of the late Reverend Stegen and give you a glimpse into his work.
